Building

The Generaal Belliardstraat was opened in 1830. There was a need for a fast connection between the two new docks, the Bonaparte-dock and the Willem-dock, and the Stadswaag. The goods delivered by ship had to be weighed in the Stadswaag to determine the taxes on them.

That building - the city weighing house - burned down after a lightning strike in 1873. This fire also resulted in the building of the Museum of Fine Arts. Our mayors were terrified when the raging fire at the Stadswaag threatened to spread to the buildings of the Academy of Fine Arts, which at the time served as a museum where, among other things, the beautiful Rubens paintings were kept.

The fairly large plots in the street were almost all bought by merchants. They built beautiful spacious mansions with courtyards for the powerful nation's horses and warehouses, where they could temporarily store their goods.

One of these buildings is "De Lokeend", where we have two rooms to receive our guests. The first room is located downstairs in the front house, where up to 40 people can dine. The other room is located on the first floor of the warehouse, which is reached through the wide passageway, where the old railway still runs. Here we can receive up to 75 people, even more for a reception.
